Model Answers

Part 1

Are you happy to be the age you are now?

Of course yes… I am in my late twenties when most of my characteristics and directions are mostly shaped and stabilized. You know… when I was still in college and also for the first few years at work, I struggled desperately to find out who I was and what I wanted. That was not a particularly enjoyable time but everyone must go through it, I guess.

When you were a child, did you think a lot about your future?

Oh, no… Rather I used to think about how to save the world, just kidding… In fact, I’ve watched many superhero movies when I was little such as Gao Ranger, Superman, Superwoman so there is no surprise I was so into fighting games. You see how childish I was back then.

Do you think you have changed as you have got older?

Definitely yes, everybody does. Besides the physical change of getting bigger and heavier apparently, I had many differences in personalities and worldviews. I guess I became more introvert person as I spent more time connecting with my inner-self to find out what I truly desired.

What will be different about your life in the future?

Well, let me think about it… I want to be young forever so I hope even when I stepped into my golden years, I will still stay young at heart. By that way, there won’t be any generation gap between me and my future children.

Part 2

Cue Card

Describe a time when you started using a new technological device (e.g. a new computer or phone)

You should say :

  • What device you started using
  • Why you started using this device
  • How easy or difficult it was to use and explain how helpful this device was to you.

Today I would like to tell you about my first time using a smartphone which was about 10 years ago.

Well, I guess I am not really a techie or any type of technology fan. That is the reason why having the first smartphone was really an eye-opening experience for me. I got it from my mother as a birthday gift on my 18th birthday and I absolutely loved it.

At that time, I had just been accepted to college and I needed an electronic gadget which is convenient as a computer and portable as an iPod. A smartphone from Samsung was not a bad start. You know.. it is like having a whole world in my pocket. I can surf the Internet, send an email, make free international calls and even read e-books.

The cellphone was so user-friendly that it took me only 1 hour to figure out all the functions and made the most out of it.

With the help of this device, I no longer had to carry around my heavy laptop and still could access emails and messages especially it became very handy when I went abroad. Moreover, this phone also replaced a digital camera so it kept many pictures and memories which I can revisit whenever I want.

That’s all I want to share.

Vocabulary :

  • Techie:  a person who is expert in or enthusiastic about technology, especially computing
  • Eye-opening: causing a strong emotional reaction because of unexpectedness
  • Portable: able to be easily carried or moved
  • User-friendly:
  • Handy: useful, efficient

Part 3

Technology and Education

What is the best age for children to start computer lessons?

With the introduction of the Internet, the world is getting flatter than ever before. Therefore, it is becoming more vital for children to master computer skills to meet the need for future careers. However, computers can be addictive and harmful without parental guidance so maybe 10 is a proper age.

Do you think that schools should use more technology to help children learn?

Yes, why not… the Internet was one of the cutting-edge innovation of all time and we should utilize it. Schools should be equipped with state-of-the-art technology and the fastest Internet speed so that students can research and access enormous resources online. In fact, they can even self-study their favourite subjects with the availability of online courses.

Do you agree or disagree that computers will replace teachers one day?

That is, in fact, very possible and it is happening now. As I mentioned before, online classes are increasingly popular due to time flexibility and low cost so people can basically study anything on the Internet without human interactions. Technology can be indeed labour-saving.

Technology and Society

How much has technology improved and how we communicate with each other?

It dramatically changed the way we talk. Before letters and snail mails were the most common methods of communication, well, it is a different story now, people can send instant messages and make free international calls so distance is no longer a problem…only Internet speed is.

Do you agree that there are still many more major technological innovations to be made?

Yes, I think so. One of the features of technology is that it can get outdated pretty quick such as a smartphone or laptop. New applications or functions are born every day which obsolete the previous models incredibly fast. I believe there are so many new technology waiting to be discovered.

Could you suggest some reasons why some people are deciding to reduce their use of technology?

Well yeah, technology comes along with its pros and cons. In computer time, everything can be done online and people seemingly spend more time with their electronic gadgets than with their family members and friends. It is a sad thing as lack of human interactions can easily lead to physical and mental illness such as obesity and autism. I guess some people realize the side-effects and start to reduce their time with technology

Vocabulary :

  • The world is getting flattered
  • Cutting-edge innovation
  • State-of-the-art technology
  • Labour-saving
  • Snail mails
  • Outdated (adj)
  • Obsolete (v)
  • Physical and mental illness
  • Side effects
